THE MET GALA AT LAST

As usual, my apologies for the pause on posting... the end of year wrap up was (as it always seems to be) more busy than normal. But at long last the night of my beloved Met Gala has arrived and inspired be to find the time to post again! The Met Gala, my favorite red carpet event of the year, always brings out the best in sartorial craziness and I look forward to it every time spring rolls around. This year's theme was "white tie with decorations" (whatever the heck that means) hollywood, artists, and designers alike totally brought their A game. Plus, HONY was there taking pictures and collecting fun facts about all the awesome attendees, check out the coverage here.

Here are my favorite looks from the night with my first thought upon seeing them (to keep things short and sweet) :

Tabitha Simmons in Dolce and Gabbana
"Like a dewey forest nymph with great hair."

Gabrielle Union in Prada
"Thought there'd be more crop tops... this one's cool though"

 Liu Wen in Zac Posen
"HOW is it even possible to be so beautiful?"

 Dree Hemingway in Proenza Schouler
"Some kind of majestic 70's goddess action going on here"

Dakota Johnson in Jason Wu
"Be my friend. Give me your hair."

Georgia May Jagger in Thierry Mugler
"AWESOME. Wait is any skin even covered? Hang on."

Rachel McAdams in Ralph Lauren
"It's like it's just your skin... how do you do that and look so good, Rachel? How?"

Katie Holmes in Marchesa
"Katie? Is that you? You look like a runaway Versailles princess with amazing taste."

Jay-Z and Beyonce in Givenchy
"-makes happy crying noise-"

Emma Stone in Thakoon
"So much pink! SO MUCH PINK! So much wonderful. Oh and also more crop top!"

Amber Heard in Giambatista Valli
"You are so cool, so elegant, and so so stylin'."

Golden Globes 2014

I love the Golden Globes because I get to see all my favorite movie people and TV people dressing up and being awesome all in one place. While I was let down by Jennifer Lawrence's weird Ariel-wearing-a-sail outfit, she did make a great photobomb, and Tina/Amy's wonderfulness blinded me from any truly awful styling choices.

Here are my top 5 looks from the night:

Lupita Nyong'o in Ralph Lauren
Probably my favorite look of the night, Lupita absolutely killed it in Ralph Lauren. The color, the cape, the minimalistic styling. I gasped when I saw it.

Olivia Wilde in Gucci Premiere
It's no secret that I idealize Olivia Wilde in every way; her hair, her style, her interpretive dance skills, her choice of husband (the ever so lucky Jason Sudekis). This dress, which, I might add, perfectly hugs her baby bump, is just another part of Olivia Wilde for me to idealize.

Elizabeth Moss in J. Mendel
During the show I genuinely just continually repeated how much I loved Elizabeth Moss's dress. The color, the texture, it's all perfect. AND! She won best actress in a mini-series for her phenomenal show, Top of the Lake, and accepted her award in the most adorable way.

Cate Blanchett in Armani
Ever since I saw her in Givenchy Couture at the 2011 Oscars, I've admired Cate Blanchett's bold red carpet style. This Armani gown did not disappoint, with just the right amount of sheer and a high neck/low back combo, Cate looked as amazing as ever.

Finally, Tina Fey in Carolina Herrera and Amy Poehler in Stella McCartney
These two are just the best friends in the whole world and I desperately wish they would let me be best friends with them too. They also looked absolutely amazing in every one of their three gowns (and the one suit that Amy whipped out), but these two were my absolute favorite.

Emmy's Red Carpet Review

After a bit of a break from posting and a very busy start to the year, I'm finally getting back to blogging!

While I didn't actually get to watch the award show or the red carpet, I'm still really excited about the looks from the Emmys this weekend (mostly because I watch too much TV so I love all the people wearing the looks). Because I'm so excited, I'm just going to focus on the gowns that worked rather than even think about those that didn't.

First off, Cobie Smulders in J. Mendel. How I Met Your Mother is definitely up there in my top 5 favorite shows so I know that Cobie looks phenomenal almost constantly. But this gown/hair/makeup/accessorizing combo is simply drop dead gorgeous.

January Jones in Givenchy. I always love Givenchy, the gowns are typically ethereal and incredibly detailed, always making the person wearing them look like some kind of princess from the future. But this dress has a really nice simplicity and traditional shape to it that compliment the details of the lace quite well.

Kerry Washington in Marchesa. I mean talk about princesses. Kerry Washington looks like what I can only hope my fairy godmother would look like were I lucky enough to have one.

Kaley Cuoco in Vera Wang. I love Kaley Cuoco. I want Kaley Cuoco to be my best friend and then I want her to let me borrow this dress.

Rose Byrne in Calvin Klein Collection. I absolutely love Calvin Klein for the red carpet. There's something about the simplicity of this style of gown that makes it so much more interesting than nearly everything else I saw from the Emmys.

Laura Dem in Naeem Kan. I know I literally just said I love the simplicity of a Calvin Klein gown, but Naeem Kan just does the intricately detailed, beaded gown so well.

Kiernan Shipka in Delpozo. Little Kiernan, always age appropriate as well as overwhelmingly beautiful. I love the floral theme, especially in the metallic 3D flowers on the skirt.

Side note: It wasn't until I'd run through a compilation of red carpet photos looking for my favorites that I realized I nearly entirely picked blush toned gowns. Apparently I'm really into blush right now.

Cannes Film Festival

One of my best friends is currently volunteering at the Cannes Film Festival, so while she stands mere feet away from my favorite celebrities wearing my favorite designers, I'm attempting to bury my jealousy in red carpet photos.

First of all, doesn't this shot of Leo, Carey, and Baz Luhrmann just melt your little heart?

And how about that Christian Dior gown?

Nicole Kidman, also killing it in Christian Dior. That whimsical dress with those hot pink Barbie heels is driving me crazy in the absolute best way.

Last but not least, Emma Watson, one of my very favorite people because not only is she beautiful, stylish, and talented, but she's ridiculously sweet and down to earth to boot. Check out this article here. She looked amazing in both Christopher Kane at the photocall and Chanel at the Bling Ring premier. Bonus points for the ear cuff paired with Chanel.

Punk'd

Ahh the Met Gala, quite possibly the best Red Carpet event of the year. Though not everyone seemed to understand how to interpret the punk theme for the formal occasion, many figured it out and everyone else still looked fabulous.

The Good:

Lauren Santo Domingo in Dolce & Gabbana: LSD got it RIGHT. Mixing a silky, demure gown with a mesh bodysuit and a spiked dog collar doesn't entirely sound like the best combination, but hell, it works.

Kirsten Dunst in Rodarte: The feathers, the minor mesh, the plunging neckline, the emerald ombre; every piece of this gown is to die for and so wonderfully accurate for the punk theme.

Hailee Steinfeld in Donna Karan Atelier: Admittedly this doesn't look very punk, in fact it looks quite sweet what with the white and the maturity. However, there's nothing Steinfeld wears better than a midi dress and the smoky eye in combination with the beading detail on the gown pull this whole look together so well that you forget about all the punks in the surrounding area.

Aubrey Plaza in Marios Schwab: Aubrey Plaza, my sarcastic sweetheart, you pull this off perfectly. I can't even tell what this is made of but I love it and I have to have it.

Sarah Jessica Parker in Giles Deacon with (obviously) a Phillip Treacy headpiece: I mean were we expecting anything less?

Allison Williams in Altuzarra: Marni? Is that really you? Because damn girl you make a great punk. Lace? Cut-outs? Octopus looking hem? This dress has it all.

Julianne Hough in Topshop: Let the word "Topshop" just sink in for a second... Yeah that's it.

Emmy Rossum in Donna Karan Atelier: Okay, I think it's clear by now that I really liked all the white last night... But isn't making a white dress punk more impressive than resorting to the classic black leather look? I certainly think so, and evidently so does Emmy Rossum's perfectly punk hair. Without that up-do we'd be looking at a wedding dress here.

Alexa Chung in Erdem: One of my favorite black looks from last night. It has a punk feel to it what with the amount of skin we can see, but the way the skin is displayed, under a sheer layer of fabric with delicate cut-outs above, adds intrigue.

Rooney Mara in Givenchy: Is there anything Rooney Mara does better than edging up white dresses? She's a fantastic actress but seriously if she just wore white dresses for a living I think she'd still do pretty well.

The Bad:

Kim Kardashian in Ricardo Tisci: I feel like Kim kind of doesn't understand maternity wear in normal life, but clearly she doesn't really get it here either. It's one thing to show off the baby bump, I mean maternity clothes aren't tent dresses anymore, but a skin tight floral turtleneck with a giant slit up the leg just doesn't seem like the right choice.

Jennifer Lopez in Michael Kors: Okay it's not the worst... and JLo does look amazing, but what is this? Maybe it's the fact that I can't really tell what animal print this looks like; is it leopard? a little cheetah? but maybe it's closer to giraffe? I just don't know and I just don't like it.

Ginnifer Goodwin in Tory Burch: This is another, "it's just not working". To begin with I feel like Tory Burch is probably not the go-to for a punk themed Met Gala, but even then Ginnifer Goodwin usually does so much better than this.

Gwyneth Paltrow in Valentino Couture: It has so much potential... and yet... it's not going to work. I love the uniquely placed cut-out at the top, but besides that there's not much else. Afte a long analysis, I've decided to blame the fabric in this bubblegum pink as the source of the problem. Were it pretty much any color this would be just as fabulous as everything else GOOP has ever worn.

Julianne Moore in Balenciaga: Let me begin by saying the color choice was flawless here. And let me end by saying everything else was very wrong. The hair, the shape of the dress, the accessories, all so painfully wrong.
